Acquiring+Learning=Understanding Spanish

I will try to speak Spanish as much as possible. During our "Spanish only" times, do not panic! You will not always understand every single word I say, nor will you need to understand every single word. The more you pay attention during class, the more Spanish you will understand and be able to use each day. This process is known as acquiring a language. Students who make the effort to use Spanish they are learning will be rewarded with extra Euros.

You will also learn by discussing language rules, reading, and reading. For these activities we will use English to help clarify. For example, when we discuss how Spanish is similar or different from English, I will speak English. We will also use English when directions are too complicated or lengthy for certain assignments.

Speaking Spanish

The ability to speak like a native person requires lots of listening time in the target language. Think about a baby of 6 months. He or she listens to parents and other children for at least 2 full years (some children take longer) before beginning to speak in sentences. I will encourage you to speak in Spanish, but I also realize that you deserve lots of opportunities to hear spoken Spanish first.
